The death of Cardinal Elio Sgreccia certainly leaves a great void. I remember him – I was still a young priest at the time – as one of the pioneers in the world of medicine and health care ministry, especially in the area of \u200b\u200bresearch on bioethical problems. The integration of Christian doctrine and scientific subjects was very important in his approach, teaching that the Church can legitimately speak of science and can do so with knowledge of the facts, with rigor, with intelligence and faith in the human. From this comes the dialogue that we have developed over the years on how to give life to that new ‘civilization of love’, on which John Paul II insisted so much. This passes through all phases of human life, especially the first formative years within the family, which is the true womb able to welcome, guard, protect, and develop a new mature and conscious life.<\/p>\n
As President of the Pontifical Academy for Life since 2016, dialogue with the Cardinal President Emeritus has been a constant in our relationship. We often spoke about John Paul II’s determination to address these issues, which have pastoral implications. It was because of this factor that John Paul II appointed him, as a bishop and scholar, President.\u00a0\u00a0Several times, we spoke of the need to broaden the horizon of bioethics to include issues related to the environment and new technological discoveries. Today we are called to continue this work and – as Pope Francis tells us in the Letter of the\u00a0Humana Communitas\u00a0–\u00a0\u00a0approach the processes that characterize contemporaneity with wisdom and audacity, to foster an understanding of the heritage of faith at the level a reason that is worthy of mankind. This is why reason it is crucial to participate in the discussion with all concerned so that the development and use of the resources that science and technology make available to us, are oriented to the promotion of the dignity of the person and universal good”.<\/p>\n
La scomparsa del Cardinale Elio Sgreccia lascia certamente un grande vuoto. Lo ricordo \u2013 ero ancora giovane prete \u2013 come uno dei pionieri nel mondo della medicina e della pastorale sanitaria, soprattutto sul versante della ricerca relativa ai problemi della bioetica. \u00c8 stata molto importante, nel suo approccio, l\u2019integrazione tra dottrina cristiana e materie scientifiche, insegnando che la Chiesa pu\u00f2 legittimamente parlare di scienza e lo pu\u00f2 fare con cognizione di causa, con rigore, con intelligenza e fede nell\u2019umano. Da qui anche il dialogo che abbiamo sviluppato, nel corso degli anni, su come dare vita a quella nuova \u2018civilt\u00e0 dell\u2019amore\u2019, su cui tanto insisteva Giovanni Paolo II, e che passa per tutte le fasi della vita umana, soprattutto i primi anni formativi all\u2019interno della famiglia, che \u00e8 il vero grembo capace di accogliere, custodire, proteggere, far sviluppare una nuova vita matura e consapevole.<\/i><\/p>\n
Dal 2016, quale Presidente della Pontificia Accademia per la Vita, il dialogo con il cardinale Presidente Emerito \u00e8 stato una costante del nostro rapporto. Parlavamo spesso della decisa volont\u00e0 di Giovanni Paolo II nell\u2019affrontare tali temi. E, per il loro riflesso pastorale, fu proprio Giovanni Paolo II che lo volle, come vescovo e studioso, nominandolo Presidente. E pi\u00f9 volte abbiamo parlato della necessit\u00f2 di allargare l\u2019orizzonte della bioetica anche ai temi legati all\u2019ambiente e alle nuove scoperte della tecnica. Oggi siamo chiamati a continuare questo lavoro ed entrare con saggezza e audacia \u2013 come ci dice Papa Francesco nella Lettera Humana Communitas \u2013 nei processi che caratterizzano la contemporaneit\u00e0, in vista di una comprensione del patrimonio della fede all\u2019altezza di una ragione degna dell\u2019uomo. Per questo \u00e8 decisivo partecipare alla discussione con tutti i soggetti perch\u00e9 lo sviluppo e l\u2019impiego delle risorse che scienza e tecnica ci mettono a disposizione, siano \u00a0orientate alla promozione della dignit\u00e0 della persona e al bene pi\u00f9 universale.<\/i><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
