{"id":24288,"date":"2018-06-27T16:15:16","date_gmt":"2018-06-27T14:15:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vincenzopaglia.it\/?p=24288"},"modified":"2018-06-27T16:16:31","modified_gmt":"2018-06-27T14:16:31","slug":"rish-catholic-hospitals-who-perform-abortions-fail-to-be-catholic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vincenzopaglia.it\/index.php\/rish-catholic-hospitals-who-perform-abortions-fail-to-be-catholic.html","title":{"rendered":"Irish Catholic hospitals who perform abortions &#8216;fail to be Catholic&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p><strong>&#8216;There comes a point at which you have got to stand your ground and say we cannot obey that law if it requires us to carry out direct abortions&#8217;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Irish hospitals with a Catholic ethos cannot perform direct abortions and church leaders and the hospital trustees must make that clear to the government, the director of the Iona Institute has said.<\/p>\n<p>David Quinn was responding to Taoiseach Leo Varadkar\u2019s comments in the D\u00e1il in which he said provisions for conscientious objection would apply to individual doctors, nurses and midwives who do not want to participate in providing abortion services, but \u201cit will not be possible for publicly funded hospitals, no matter who their patron or owner is, to opt out of providing these necessary services\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to The Tablet, David Quinn said, \u201cThere is no way that any hospital called Catholic can perform direct abortions\u201d as it was \u201crepugnant to their ethos\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Those that do perform abortions \u201cfail to be Catholic\u201d and it was \u201cincumbent upon church leaders and the hospitals to make that clear to the government.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere comes a point at which you have got to stand your ground and say we cannot obey that law if it requires us to carry out direct abortions,\u201d he said and added, \u201cjust because hospitals are publicly funded does not mean they have to be uniform\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In their statement following their summer general meeting the Irish bishops said the right of conscientious objection of healthcare professionals must be respected.<\/p>\n<p>They also warned that those who refuse to be involved in abortion services on grounds of conscientious objection should not be expected to refer women to other health professionals willing to provide abortion services.<\/p>\n<p>Such a requirement would be a great injustice and a serious violation of conscience, the bishops warned and would only be \u201ca way of pretending to respect freedom of conscience while actually requiring one person to cooperate in what he or she sincerely believes is the wrong-doing of another\u201d and would be in contravention of the Code of Ethical Standards for Healthcare provision on conscientious objection.<\/p>\n<p>Separately, Archbishop Vincenzo Paglia, President of the Pontifical Academy for Life and a previous President of the Pontifical Council for the Family, told the Sunday Independent that \u201cthe Church cannot be a party to the dirty work of others [abortion]\u201d and that the Church could not be \u201ccomplicit in the cold-blooded aiding of the dirty work of death\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking about the abortion referendum, he said, \u201cYou have to acknowledge that the recent history of the Irish Church is one of enormous problems and it is clear that the way that this whole matter worked out [the referendum] was greatly influenced by those problems, by that climate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thetablet.co.uk\/news\/9295\/irish-catholic-hospitals-who-perform-abortions-fail-to-be-catholic-\">(THE TABLET)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8216;There comes a point at which you have got to stand your ground and say we cannot obey that law if it requires us to carry out direct abortions&#8217;
