{"id":23305,"date":"2017-08-24T13:47:32","date_gmt":"2017-08-24T11:47:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.vincenzopaglia.it\/?p=23305"},"modified":"2017-08-24T14:49:48","modified_gmt":"2017-08-24T12:49:48","slug":"centenary-of-romeros-birth-celebrated-in-southwark","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vincenzopaglia.it\/index.php\/centenary-of-romeros-birth-celebrated-in-southwark.html","title":{"rendered":"Centenary of Romero&#8217;s birth celebrated in Southwark"},"content":{"rendered":"<!--[if lt IE 9]><script>document.createElement('audio');<\/script><![endif]-->\n<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-23305-1\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/mpeg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vincenzopaglia.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/00592129-2.mp3?_=1\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vincenzopaglia.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/00592129-2.mp3\">http:\/\/www.vincenzopaglia.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/00592129-2.mp3<\/a><\/audio>\n<p>(Vatican Radio) August 15th 2017 marks the centenary of the birth of Blessed Oscar Romero, the archbishop of San Salvador who was assassinated for speaking out on behalf of the poor and oppressed during his country\u2019s military dictatorship.<\/p>\n<p>There are many events planned to mark the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.radiovaticana.va\/news\/2017\/03\/23\/oscar_romero_anniversary_celebrated_in_his_centenary_year\/1299446\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">anniversary year<\/a>, both in his native El Salvador but also in countries around the world, where his life and legacy continue to motivate those working for justice and peace today.<\/p>\n<p>In the\u00a0<strong>London diocese of Southwark<\/strong>\u00a0a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.romerotrust.org.uk\/news\/mass-mark-romeros-100th-birthday\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mass<\/a>\u00a0will be celebrated at St George&#8217;s Cathedral on August 12th, while an\u00a0<strong>ecumenical evensong<\/strong>\u00a0will be held in\u00a0<strong>Westminster Abbey<\/strong>\u00a0on September 23rd.<\/p>\n<p>The Archbishop of Southwark Peter Smith will preside at the Mass on Saturday, while Italian\u00a0<strong>Archbishop Vincenzo Paglia<\/strong>\u00a0will travel from Rome to preach the homily. Archbishop Paglia currently serves as head of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.academiavita.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pontifical Academy for Life<\/a>\u00a0and the St John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family. He is also the postulator of the cause for canonisation of Archbishop Romero.<\/p>\n<p>Philippa Hitchen talked to Archbishop Paglia about why the murdered Salvadoran Church leader continues to inspire so many people of all faiths and none.<\/p>\n<p>Archbishop Paglia says the example of Romero is \u201ca universal example\u201d and \u201ca clear evangelical witness of love\u201d in a world of difficulties, injustices, war and terror attacks. His voice and his testimony, he says, is clear and understandable for all people, above all for the poor and voiceless.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8216;Providential link&#8217; between Pope and Romero<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Archbishop Paglia says there is \u201can interesting alliance between the first Latin American pope and the first martyr of Vatican II\u201d . He describes the \u201cprovidential link between Romero\u2019s witness and Pope Francis\u2019 engagement\u201d as \u201ca sort of good link between heaven and earth in this current moment\u201d. \u00a0In a certain sense, he adds, Pope Francis needs the witness of Romero to continue to preach the Gospel of love for the poor as a strategic pastoral initiative.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hopes for canonisation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After attending the beatification of Romero in San Salvador in May 2015, Archbishop Paglia says he hopes that during the next year the Vatican Congregation for the Causes of Saints may approve a miracle and make its final decision for his canonisation.<\/p>\n<p>After the difficulties of those who opposed Romero\u2019s beatification, Archbishop Paglia says \u201ceven those who were against him have to accept the decision of the pope\u201d. \u00a0The magisterium of Pope Francis is now linked to the witness of Romero, he says, as \u201ca clear sign of the Holy Spirit\u2019s inspiration in the Church\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Building a globalisation of solidarity<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Archbishop Paglia notes how many people are struck by the example of Romero, not just in the Catholic and Anglican Churches, but followers of other religions \u201cand also a lot of non-believers\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Romero continues \u201cto show, to push all of us\u201d, Archbishop Paglia says, \u201cto trust in the Gospel, to accept the Word of God and put into practice the word of the Gospel\u201d. \u00a0If we follow this example, he concludes, \u201cwe can not only testify to the Gospel\u201d but we can change the world by helping to \u201cconstruct a better globalization\u201d of solidarity.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.radiovaticana.va\/news\/2017\/08\/11\/centenary_of_romeros_birth_celebrated_in_southwark\/1330018\"><em>(Vatican Radio)<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(Vatican Radio) August 15th 2017 marks the centenary of the birth of Blessed Oscar Romero, the archbishop of San Salvador who was assassinated for speaking out on behalf of the poor and oppressed during his country\u2019s military dictatorship.
